Formed in 2009 by drummer Oskar "COSMARUL" Norman Westin and guitarist Alexander "SPURCATUL" Zachiu, ABSUMBRA began as an elaborate blackened death metal project, experimenting with low tuning, intense blast beats and epic apocalyptic riffing. After a few months of jamming and rehersing, Jesper "BLESTEMATUL" Lundberg was recruited as rhythm guitarist, backup vocalist and song writer. Before long, the experiments went further into the realm of minimalistic black metal with baltic influences, and the band discarded some of the original death metal elements. Due to dissimilar goals and visions, Alexander left ABSUMBRA in 2010 to focus on his solo project CEMETERIUS, and the new sound of ABSUMBRA began to take form. Working primarily on atmosphere and elements of surrealism, dark folklore and grand epicness, they started the songwriting anew from scratch, with Jesper developing the sound, the riffs and the orchestral elements and Oskar working on lyrics, artwork and background mythology. Some potential band members auditioned for ABSUMBRA until Joel "NEBUNUL" Lindberg finally joined the band in January 2012 as a promising lead guitarist, but quit in early 2013 due to lack of time and logistical issues. Spanish/Swedish black metal vocalist Ivar "HAOTICUL" Bergelin joined the band in November 2012, contributing with masterful black metal vocals to further lift the songs to an even more ambitious level. ABSUMBRA is currently searching for a lead guitarist and a bass player to complete the ensemble and make possible future live perfomances.
